Telling Tales…
Jane Alston started writing songs at the age of eight. She taught herself to play piano and later the guitar. After busking on the underground for a living, she began to perform on the London pub scene.
In 1991, Jane helped to form all girl group ‘The Brendas’. A cult band in the London gay scene as well as the London pub scene; they toured in Europe and played festivals here and abroad. She then joined rockabilly band - ‘The Well Oiled Sisters’, supporting Morrissey on the ‘Your Arsenal’ tour.
The Brendas did several live sessions and interviews for the Lucy Longhurst show on GLR and made a memorable TV appearance on the ‘James Whale Show’ in 1998 performing ‘A Blow to Your Head’. When released in 1994 this song received critical acclaim and great reviews from NME & Melody Maker. One critic said “A Blow to your Head is a truly great tune sung with gusto and verve by the band’s fantastic songstress Jane Alston”(Patrick Nicholson Detour Magazine).
Jane has since returned to her roots as an acoustic singer/songwriter. The demos on this site were recorded with her two lovely guitarists Paula Young and Tom Wright.
